We are experts in dead animal removal, and take our job seriously. When removing dead animals, we do a COMPLETE job — not only do we remove the dead animal from your home or yard, we also decontaminate the area, deodorize it, and dispose of the animal or cremate it. If you aren't sure whether the stench in your house is due to a rotting carcass or another reason, we can sniff it out with our noses from our years of experience. We remove dead raccoons, dead opossums, dead skunks, dead squirrels, dead birds, even dead dogs and cats. We frequently remove dead rodents from inside walls, because poison kills rats and mice, who die in your house. We completely solve your dead animal problem by taking these steps:

  • Sniff out the dead animal if it is somewhere in your home
  • When necessary, for example if the animal is in a wall or under your house, cut a hole to remove the animal
  • Remove the dead animal, safely and completely (and seal the hole if needed)
  • Finish the job by decontaminating and deodorizing your home
  • Properly dispose of the dead animal through incineration or other means
  • Prevent it from happening again by finding out how they got in your house

Dead animal carcass removal is specialty work. Sometimes the job is simple, such as a dead opossum in the yard, in which case we can simply wear our gloves and respirator mask, bag the carcass, and take it away for incineration. Sometimes this is more complex, such as when the dead animal is under a home crawlspace, under a porch or deck or shed. Or if the animal is larger, such as a dog or a deer. The most complex cases are dead animals inside the house. The animal may have died inside the attic, or down in the walls, or the duct work, or any other part of the architecture. You may have a bad smell in your home, and you're not even sure what's causing it. We've removed not just dead animals, but rotting food, bad mold, etc. We specialize in locating the source of the smell, and we very commonly cut a hole in the ceiling or wall to remove the animal. We remove every bit of the carcass, mop up the juices, vacuum the maggots, spray it and wipe it down with disinfectant, cleaner, and we repair the hole we cut. In some cases we use ozone machines to neutralize odor.

Augusta Dead Animal Tip: Why do opossums die under houses?

Humans are expanding their territory day by day and are inhabiting lands which wild animals once called their homes. This leads to regular encounters with such uninvited animals and some undesirable situations. Opossums are a typical example of wild animals which are found to be living near or under your house. They are nomadic and do not like to dig or put effort into building their own house. Opossums favor secure, dark and below the ground areas to stay. It is common to find female opossums living in basements and under houses as they provide ideal conditions for them to nature and breed their off-springs. Also, the presence of such females tends to lure in male creatures, who are in search of a partner. Animals living at a location might die there someday.

But why do they die under houses?
They may die under your property due to a number of reasons, sometimes it all comes down to natural causes. Some common reasons are listed below:

Infection: Wild animals carry harmful parasites and bacteria. Their immune systems are always at war with them, but the battle is not still won. The animals can (and at times do) get infected due to such viruses, which translates to a fatal outcome. While living in your home, they may expire there due to an infection.
Attack from a larger animal: Opossums may get attacked by predators like foxes and hawks, which can significantly injure them. They may die under your house in this disabled state.
Poison Ingestion: It is typical for opossums and similar sized animals living near humans to consume poison intended for rats. After ingestion, they do not die immediately and can crawl back under houses or to their habitation. When the poison kicks in, they pass away there.

Side note
Additionally, it is essential to know that these animals are known to play dead when threatened and at times replicate the appearance and smell of a sick or dead animal. While acting dead, saliva foam may appear around its mouth, its eye-lids may close, lips drawn back, and a foul-smelling fluid may also be secreted. Do not let that fool you, as the animal will regain consciousness after a few minutes or as long as up to four hours. Make sure that the animal you have found under your real estate is lifeless.

What to do if a dead opossum is found?
If you are sure that you have a dead animal under your house, immediately call the concerned authorities to assist you in disposing of the dead body properly. Although not recommended, if you decide to handle the situation by yourself, make sure to wear proper protective gear such as gloves and a mask, so that you do not come in direct contact with the dead body.
